What We Love About the Nintendo DSi: Screen Size

One of the many new features of the newly released Nintendo DSi is the new, increased screen size. The size of both screens on the older Nintendo DS Lite was three inches. On the brand new DSi, however, the screens are a generous three and a quarter inches, which takes up most of the room provided by both halves of the folding unit. On the bottom half of the unit, there is only room for the buttons and the screen- there is very little room left that doesn’t have either screen or button on it. While the extra quarter inch added to the DSi screen might not seem like much, it makes a world of difference when you’re actually playing a game. It’s always helpful to have a bigger screen so that all the graphics are easier to see.

Because there is an extra one quarter inch added to the Nintendo DSi screen size, the graphics in every game are larger and clearer. Games that have many small characters is a large background playing area are easier to see, and it is easier to get the character where it is supposed to go because with higher visibility, it is easier to perform jumps and other maneuvers and land in the right place. Sometimes, with the older DS Lite game system, it can be a little hard to see the fine details of the game setting, especially when the character itself it covering up strategic points on the game background. With a larger screen size, it makes this problem a thing of the past.

The increased screen size is also great for those who may have had a hard time seeing because of eyesight problems. Some people simply have trouble seeing, and they may wear corrective glasses to address the eyesight problems. But when playing video games, especially portable or hand held video games, eyesight problems can cause an obvious problem. But with the bigger screen, there doesn’t seem to be any problem with visibility. Kids love the larger screen simply because they can see the action better, while adults like the increased size because it makes it easier to see, especially for those who have a hard time doing any kind of close work, like reading or perhaps sewing. Not being able to see what is going on can cause enough frustration that a person might simply put the video game down and never look at it again. We are confident that this will not happen with the DSi. The bigger screens and improved speakers can also make a DSi the perfect holiday gift for retired persons. They could really enjoy playing brain exercise games or some of the traditional puzzle games. One good choice could be a game like Tetris, although there are also computerized versions of the traditional tiled puzzle games. These types of games are easier to play as well on the DSi because they are easier to see. You can tell where to put puzzle pieces, which makes it easier to play without frustration.
