I am 58 years old, and I have become a true gamer, at least as much of one that a man of my age can expect to be. My grandson visited me last summer and brought along a hand held game system. He taught me how to use it, and I really liked it.
A couple of months ago, when he came to visit again, he brought me a gift. He decided that he wanted me to have my own game system, so he went with his dad to buy Nintendo DSI for me. Now, this is a different console than the one he brought with him last year, so I had to learn how to use it. It wasn’t very long until I was able to connect to the Internet and learn my way around.
My grandson didn’t know it at the time, but what he has done for me is more than just offering me a chance to learn to play different titles and enjoy it myself. He also opened up a way for me to keep in touch with him, play games with him, share photos with him, and even chat with him. Maybe that was his goal when he gave me this gift. Whether it was or not, it has made a difference in our relationship.
We have always been close. He is 16 now and comes to stay with me a couple of times a year. We live on opposite sides of the country, so having the ability to enjoy something together from a distance has increased our communication, our closeness, and our fun times together.
Now, ever since he decided to get one for me, I have noticed that he wants to talk and communicate even more than he used to. Before he left my house, he showed me everything this system can do - how to connect to the company and find new apps for some of the older games, how to use the helps center, how to change the lenses for the cameras, and how to share pictures and chat with him when we play.
My grandson is really one of a kind. I wish my friends had grandchildren who want to know them, because he has certainly proven that he wants to know me. This is something we share, and I am proof that these consoles are not just for kids. Choosing to buy Nintendo DSI means offering someone a tool to keep family members close while having fun together.
