I have been a physical education teacher for fifteen years. During this time I’ve watched the kids that I work with get more and more addicted to video games, and get further and further away from walking around outside and enjoying the fresh air. I’ve seen them glue their butts to the couch in order to play on their consoles and ignore that there is tons of games that can be played outside.
Last year a friend of mine showed me the Nintendo Wii. I had no intentions of playing it but during a party at her house, someone turned the Wii on. I watched some friends and co-workers playing tennis and bowling and was intrigued. I strapped the Wii remote on myself and realized that while it didn’t get you a huge aerobic workout, it did get you up and moving around. After playing with the system for a few hours, my wife and I decided to buy one. We then bought a Wii Fit and my stance on video games has changed entirely.
The DSi
While I don’t believe that all video game companies are out to do the best for children and adults both, I do think that the Nintendo corporation is all about family fun and enjoyment. When I saw that people all over Japan were looking to buy it, I was curious, wondering if the Nintendo DSi could be anything like the Wii. I didn’t think it could be, as it’s a hand held gaming system, and I haven’t seen any gaming systems that are hand held that can get kids or adults up and moving around yet.
Until now. I read some Nintendo DSi reviews and heard about the pedometer that is available to purchase when you buy the DSi. When you get it, you are not only buying a gaming system, you’re buying a very high-tech pedometer, along with a camera, an internet device, and a music system. You can upload your music and use it to walk with, and because it’s about the same size as some of those smart phones, it’s easy to bring along with you. Put in a pair of earphones and you’ll be able to walk and listen to the music that you enjoy while, at the same time, keeping track of how far you’re walking with the pedometer you can buy as well.
While I don’t think I’ll be a huge fan of handheld gaming devices any time soon, the system seems pretty neat, especially since you can do so many more things with it than just play video games. As with the Wii, it looks like it’ll be a good tool to use when teaching to get kids who are addicted to video games to play and get exercise at the same time. When it comes out in the United States, I will likely be trying to figure out where to buy the Nintendo DSi in order to get one to check it out myself.
